Utah 2009

We loved this picture of Carter flying a kite on the beach

Cecily buried...but protected from the wind

Joni, Rhett and Olivia made some homemade hummingbird brew that attracted some hummingbirds. Too bad they are so fast we didn't grab the cameras in time for a picture (the birds were fast not the mad scientists). The brew consisted of melted sugar, otter pops, twizzlers, and water. Joni thought it was weird that Joel, Rhett and I shared a blanket while star gazing at night...now that I just wrote out that sentence I guess it does sound strange.
Carter loves bugs...Dad and Susan striking a pose...speaking of striking a pose, check out Bess and Cecily...this one reminded us of a high school dance. We told them to pose and Cecily went to town posing, then Bess really got into it. I mean really got into it...hahaha

For some reason this picture reminded me of the African ladies who carry baskets on their heads while trekking through the water...sorry Joel.
Glen and Rhett laughing it up after dunking my Dad in the icy lake

Last week we were in Utah, and we were able to see some of our favorite places that we haven't been to in a while. After spending the first night in Salt Lake we stayed in Logan, we love that place. Honestly, if there were more good jobs there I would move to Logan in a heartbeat. We met up for Todd and Kimiko's wedding, then we showed the newest Aggie Madison around campus. We were still used to Eastern Standard Time because we couldn't sleep in. I woke up at 6:45 and took a jog through Logan and ran down along the ridge by the temple, brought back a lot of good memories.

Thursday we went up to Bear Lake and spent a couple of days with some family at a beautiful cabin. We had fun just hanging out with everyone and playing at the beach. The water was freeeeezing and it was really windy, but we still managed to have fun. We played a lot of games, sang some songs, did some skits and never quite got onto a good sleeping schedule so by the time we were done we were completely exhausted. Joni had a rough time because she has been so tired lately, but we really enjoyed getting to know some family we don't get to see often, and those who weren't there were missed. Thanks to Glen and Kendi for being our personal taxi, and Bed & Breakfast...and thanks to my Dad for the cabin.
After Bear Lake we spent a day with Joni's family in Evanston, Wyoming. Joni actually took this picture there that turned out really well. You have to have an eye for beauty to find something like this in Evanston :) Joni's brother Ryan has always wanted to paint a picture on a pregnant belly, and since his wife never let him do it, Joni was the guinea pig...NBA theme and all...

It was good to see so many people we love, we wish we could have seen more of you but the trip just wasn't long enough.

Thoughts from an expecting parent...future dad's view

So I had a wake up call yesterday. Since Joni first found out she was pregnant I think we've both been pretty excited. It's just not how I ever imagined it would be, I always pictured myself crying when I first found out I was going to be a dad and then reading a baby book all the way through because I was so excited...just doing the things an expecting father is supposed to do or that you see people do in movies. It's been weird to go shopping for strollers and think about baby names and all that stuff, but it wasn't until yesterday when I held a 2 week old little girl that the magnitude of this whole experience hit me. That thing that makes Joni's "tumor" in her belly grow each day, and that "kicks" my hand when I place it against her belly is a living, breathing, human with emotions that we will be responsible for.

I think everyone imagines having a perfect, healthy, beautiful child. I always imagined a cute little blonde girl with curly hair, but that's about as far as my thoughts have taken me. Am I ready for this? We haven't even enrolled in a class and we've really just lived our lives the same as we always have. Everyone says "you'll know what to do" or "everything will be allright", but then they smile at me without saying anything and I know they are thinking "you have no idea what you are getting yourself into". Will I still dry heave when snot comes pouring down their face, or when they have a poop explosion while we are waiting in line at the grocery store? I don't think I will ever be able to "bare-hand" a booger like I've seen some parents do.

We were at Babies R US the other day staring at the strollers and this couple must have known exactly what we were thinking. The big macho husband who looked like a college linebacker said "you totally have to get that one, the ease in which the car seat comes in and out is fantastic".
Upon further inspection I noticed this macho frat boy had a full blown Abercrombie & Fitch shirt full of baby vomit, and he didn't care in the least bit...I followed his advice and I was actually excited to have a stroller.

Joni's belly this week...

So here's the deal if you want to know what its like to be an expecting father for the first time, not saying I'm an expert, just a few thoughts:

1) Understand that your wife will be going through a lot of pain, insecurities, and emotions that will be new to her and you will not be able to understand in the slightest. Just listen and be supportive.

2) You will find that there are bathrooms in public places that you never knew existed. In fact, employees will go out of their way to walk a pregnant woman to these secret hideouts.

3) Feeling the first kick is not what you would expect, it feels like she just has a stomach thats hungry or gassy.

4) There is a lot of psychology and thought that usually goes into choosing a name, but when it comes down to it, its just a name and you may be surprised about what names you end up liking.

5) You will most definately be surprised as you see her eat things she has never eaten, and hate things she has never hated. Some of the most delicious foods become nauseating to her.

6) She can smell you making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich 2 rooms away.

7) Her feet and back ache more than usual, so don't think its an "excuse" to be rubbed. In fact, just don't ever think anything she says or does is an excuse if you want to survive through the night.

8) If you see her not wearing her wedding ring don't be offended, because when you see what her one-time-loose wedding ring does to her finger you'll understand.

9) She will cry more...'nuff said.

10) I always wondered deep down if I might feel different about my wife when I saw her pregnant and going through so many physical changes. I still think she is absolutely beautiful, and she definately has that glow.

So I guess if I've made it this far, I think I can make it to actually holding my own child...I think. For now I just have no idea what that will be like, but I don't think it will be like anything I could possibly imagine.

The Perfect Day

Saturday was one of those days that we just didn't want to end. It all started with a round of golf, although I'm not very good it was fun anyways. Mike and I both lined up for the last hole (a par 4) and smacked our drives right onto the green. I ended up with a birdie on the hole, so even though I stunk up the other holes it was an awesome end. The girls were eating breakfast together while we were out so when we came home, we finished up what they couldn't...awesome food. All of the wives are pretty close, they have book club together and every time someone has a birthday they have breakfast together.

Then we decided to go to a swimming hole that we found by accident a few weeks ago. We saw signs that said "members only" but since Mike is the friendliest guy I know, he struck up a conversation with a nice lady on her front porch and she ended up inviting us to be her guests. We parked the car behind some bushes, and thanked our new friend Sarah for the invite. The lake has a nice little beach and a floating dock about 50 yards from the shore that we swam out to and laid on for most of the afternoon...did I forget to say we stopped to get slurpees on the way out there? It was so fun to not think about anything else but what we were doing in that moment. Thats the sign of a great day. We finished it all off with some steak and rolls with cinnamon butter at Texas Roadhouse. And what would the perfect day be without a little Dr. Mario at the end of it?
Its so fun to look back on "the best days" of our lives, but its also easy to forget that we can still have those days anytime we want right now, that's what weekends are for. Come to think of it...we have had so many of those types of days lately. This has been a very busy July for us, for work and church callings, but most of all spending our free time with good people, family and friends.

We have decided to move to North Carolina over Kentucky this time around, although we'll probably end up in Kentucky by next May. We are very excited to have made a decision, and we feel its the right one which is all we can ask for. We should be moving over Labor Day weekend in September, off to another part of the country we've never been before. Thanks to all who have come to visit recently, my mom, Joni's Dad and family...we love having visitors and playing "guide". Other July highlights: Printing our first Blog book (looks awesome), 4th of July fireworks and BBQ, finding a bunch of baby clothes for cheap at a tag sale, visitors, finishing our new wooden rocking horse, and Joni giving a beautiful talk at church, and check out Joni's first layered cake. Happy early birthdays to Joni on the 22nd and Melecia on the 23rd!

I look like I swallowed a house.

Here it is. The belly picture blog. I'm pretty sure I (Joni) look now like most women look when they are 8 months along! I suppose there is nowhere for it all to go but straight OUT because I lack what most people call a torso. I was pretty hesitant to take pictures where my massive middle was the focus, but then Paul talked me into it after taking his own pregnant belly pic.
For all of you who don't get to see me very often, this is for you!!

Everyone have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend!

Let it be known that Dilly Dawg has the power to cause all, who allow her to snuggle with them, to become immediately smitten in love with her. Dilly was all over my mom like a leach, and I think they both loved every minute of it. The view from a window at the top of the memorial at Bunker Hill. We couldn't figure out how that Penny got on the ledge.

Cobblestone in front of Paul Revere's house

The Maude came for a visit this week, and we decided to give her the ten cent (something like that) tour of New England in 2 days. She had never been to Boston, so we went on the Freedom Trail, but this time we started at the opposite end of the trail at Bunker Hill. Last time we were too tired to finish it off, so it was fun to just drive right up to it and park our car. We did decide to climb up the memorial tower however...big mistake...our legs were burning and we were huffing and puffing before lunchtime. 294 steps up to the top and I was ready for a jelly doughnut and some oxygen...in that order.
We stayed in Plymouth on Friday night, and saw the Mayflower II and Plymouth Rock on Saturday. After that we took a drive into Cape Cod and ate at a random pizza place off the side of the road. The beaches were overcrowded and expensive in the Cape, so we decided to take a drive to Newport, Rhode Island and hang out at the beach there. It really is a beautiful place, but for some reason every time we go to Newport Beach there is an eerie fog that rolls across the water even though it was sunny. On Sunday we went exploring in Connecticut and found one of the last original covered bridges, built in 1791. We definately need to spend a Saturday afternoon around there again because there is a 10 mile biking trail that goes along the Salmon River, and lots of places to have a fun little picnic.Joni is doing great, her belly is getting bigger and bigger. I actually felt the baby kick the other day, she moves a lot (the baby not Joni)...not sure what that will mean but it's so wierd. We now have two of our close friends here that are pregnant, kind of sad we won't be around to share that experience with everyone but we are excited anyways. We found out we will be moving around the beginning of September. We will either go to Louisville or North Carolina. We'll keep you posted on that one. Happy early Independence day!

Maine

On June 5th we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary in Kennebunkport, Maine. We had never been there and its not necessarily one of those states you just happen to drive through, so we decided to take the 3 hour drive and see what all the fuss was about. We just had a really fun and relaxing time together, and stayed in a B&B called the Beach House Inn right on the shoreline. We took some beach cruisers for a ride, played football on the beach, played games, tried Maine lobster, and walked around the little town shops. Turns out the Bush family owns a huge compound up there, its like their own little private peninsula. It still amazes me how much there is to see out here within a relatively short drive. Enjoy the pictures.
I tried sending the picture (below) into Martha Stewart Living Magazine...I'm a little embarrassed by it but the shot of the beach was nice.
Friday night was the Father's & Son's campout, and some friends of mine decided to go together...son...less. Well, a couple of us had sons, and I have a daughter on the way, so we justified our presence. It was really fun to hang out with just the guys, and to see the look on my friend's little boy's face when he tried s'mores for the first time. I love camping, we have to go again soon.

So now that the NBA Finals are over, we are starting Wipeout Wednesdays (totally my new favorite tv show). Nothing better than sharing a good belly laugh with friends while stuffing our faces with goodies. Some of our friends also had the great idea to start an alternating potluck every Sunday at a different family's house, so we are staying busy having fun. We love it here and aside from the steep rent, we already know we will really miss Connecticut. So that's it for now, talk to you soon.

It's a girl!!

I was going to post one of the ultrasound pictures, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that you can't make out a single thing in the picture. But from the video in person we could see the iris' of her eyes, her face, her spine, her beating heart and little hands and feet. It was truly an amazing experience. Right now she weighs about 10 ounzes and her head is about 1 1/2 inches wide. She is due November 1st, and the doctor hasn't been wrong about the sex in over 20 years.

Joni and I were a bit surprised to be honest as we both thought it would be a boy, but this past week we've both had dreams about having a girl so it kind of threw us for a loop. So there you have it, I've always wanted a little girl that looks just like Joni, so as long as she doesn't come out with a giant dome and a receding hairline we'll keep her.
This past Friday and Saturday we met Joel and Erin up at Lake Placid. It was only four hours away so we kind of invited ourselves when they told us they would be there, so thanks for letting us crash your party guys. Lake Placid is a cool place, it reminds me a lot of the typical mountain resort town with old buildings and big expensive houses. It was also the host city to the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics. We walked around and saw the sights, and one of the highlights was sneaking into the hockey arena where the "Miracle on Ice" occurred. I say sneaked in because everything to see costs money there, but for some reason the arena didn't cost us anything.
This was where we stayed, the Golden Arrow resort on Mirror Lake.
We took a row boat out on the lake...
And took some good naps...overall it was just a fun, relaxing weekend. We wanted so bad to cross Vermont off our our list of states to vistit since it was only 30 min away, but we never got there. We still have a few months left here so we'll see.

Cliff Walkin'...Freedom Trailin'...belly bustin' fun.

Last weekend we went to Newport, Rhode Island and went on the cliff walk. Its a 3 mile each-way walk with the ocean/cliffs on one side, and big 'ol mansions on the other. I was more interested in the ocean views than the rediculously huge "summer cottages" of the rich and famous, but we had a good time. It was really foggy and kind of eerie at first, but it cleared up and made for a fun afternoon. Newport is a very cool city thats only a little over an hour away.

The forty steps..........................
Lots of fun things to take pictures of along the way.
check out my sexy, hairy legs.................................

We love the ocean, and walking on the beach. Its cool to know there are so many cool places like this close by.
While we were gone, Dilly was home making trouble. We found out that if we leave fried chicken in the trashcan, Dilly will go to any lengths to try to get it...its her weakness. Although she was in trouble, I can fully understand and appreciate how fried chicken will drive you crazy. Today however she managed to jump 4 feet in the air to pull a stick of butter off the counter and eat it...bad Dilly, bad. At least she'll be well lubricated when it comes out the other end.
We took our first trip to Boston with our friends the Barnes. Their only flaw is that they are die-hard Lakers fans...we've been having fun watching the Nuggets/Lakers games together, hopefully we'll still be friends afterwards :)
Eating Pizza in Harvard Yard, look how happy Joni looks...I love it. We walked around Cambridge for a little while (home of the Harvard campus), but most of the time was spent on finding me a belt. I've been thinking I need to start running again, I found motivation on the drive to Boston because when I leaned slightly forward the button to my pants popped off...that's never happened to me before. The yummy food we ate didn't help my cause. The Freedom Trail in Boston is about a 3 mile walk through the city to all the famous historical sights. All you have to do is follow the red brick trail through the city. It was pretty fun, but you have to pay attention because the trail likes to hide from you sometimes. Boston is small enough to see most of the sights by foot, I wished I would have remembered lessons from my history class but there were plenty of people who knew what the different sights were. Just remember that its 3 miles one-way, so you have to be prepared to walk back. By the time we made it to Bunker Hill (almost made it), we all had to go to the bathroom so bad that we split a taxi ride to the train station to relieve our bladders and ride on the train across town.
This picture made us look like idiots, but I think Mike and I did a pretty good job as navigators. Check out crowded Quincy market...
By the time you've walked the whole city, you start to lose your sanity. This bridge we crossed was kind of scary because it was just metal grates on top of steel support beams, so you could see 100 feet below to the river. If you looked too hard it made you dizzy, ok, so maybe I was the only one who looked scared...mental.
We were going to try to buy some scalped tickets to Fenway but they were playing the Mets, so tickets were being sold for like $300...no thanks. That didn't keep us from eating some dogs and enjoying the atmosphere.
mmmmmmmmm..........................where's my button again?.............................
Cheers everyone!
